herbs for beginners

One of a series of "short" courses from the Garden Design Academy suitable for garden enthusiasts.

For the amateur, this is a fun way to learn a lot more about this fascinating subject. The word 'herb' in the context of this course, and as it is commonly used today, refers to those plants which are useful because of their aromatic, medicinal, cosmetic, flavouring or repellent qualities.

This is a broad based six lesson course for beginners to herb growing, covering the history of herb use, herb culture, and identification of the major herbs.

This course can be completed in anything from 60 to 100 hrs. It is easy to do at your own pace and also offers you greater understanding of the basics of horticulture. Soil, plant nutrition and plant genus & species are all covered in the lessons.

We concentrate on growing and using herbs as a hobby (we have other courses for the more commersially minded student). Thirty different herbs are studied in detail and a systematic method of identifying herbs is emphasised.

You will be working with Colin Elliott, award winning garden designer, landscaper, horticulturist and ex-Royal Gardener, who is a passionate plantsman.

The course will stimulate your interest and set you on the path to becoming an expert with these useful plants.
