cacti and succulents

One of a series of 100 hour "short" courses from the Garden Design Academy suitable for garden enthusiasts and all those dealing with plants on a professional level.

For lovers of cacti and succulents (and, it seems, people either love them or hate them) this comprehensive 8 lesson course is a must.

The course studies major cacti & succulent groups and the different ways to treat plants from each - in terms of soils, feeding, watering, pruning, pest control, planting procedures and more.

It will stimulate your interest and set you on the path to becoming an expert with these unique plants.

Cacti and Succulents are a very large group of plants often grouped together both in articles or books and in gardens where they are planted. However, while a cactus is a succulent plant not all succulents are cacti :

  • Cacti commonly come predominantly from deserts, or very dry areas.
  • Succulents come from a much more diverse range of climates. Some succulents are native to deserts but others come from relatively high rainfall areas.

Growing cacti and succulents can be rewarding, but the correct growing conditions must be created. Succulents are often easy to grow, but it can be harder to produce superb specimens. The main requirements of cacti and succulents is strong light, adequate drainage and to be sufficiently dry during any dormant period.

This is an eight lesson course of approximately 100 hours study. Each lesson culminates in an assignment which is submitted to the Academy, marked by the Academy's tutors and returned to you with any relevant suggestions, comments and if necessary, extra reading.

You will be working with Colin Elliott, award winning horticulturist and ex-Royal Gardener at Windsor Castle, who confesses to having been fascinated by this group of plants for decades.
